In September 2015, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) set the nation's first food waste reduction goal calling to cut food waste in half by 2030. What are we doing in and around Buncombe County to work toward this goal? How can we connect as a community as we do this import work?
The Regional Food Waste Summit will bring together industry leaders to initiate cross-sector conversations and spark collaboration. Attendees will learn more about what the food waste systems are in our area, with a goal of establishing a collaborative network to address food waste recovery issues including:
We will come away from the day's discussions with deeper industry connections and valuable food waste reduction strategies to allow the Asheville area to serve as a model for other communities across North Carolina striving to reduce food waste. Come be a part of it!
The full schedule of speakers and topics will be posted very soon. The event is free to attend, but participants must be registered. There is an option to purchase lunch or to bring your own. We are striving to create a zero waste event, so please bring your own coffee mug, refillable water bottle, and re-useable lunch containers and utensils. Food eligible for donation will be delivered to one of our recipient partners. All other food and paper waste will be composted at Warren Wilson's state-of-the-art composting facility.
We are so appreciative of our sponsors. Their commitment to reducing food waste and their thought leadership makes collaborative events like this possible.
